Chief Operating Officer
KIPP Capital region
Johanna Martin is Chief Operating Officer of KIPP Capital Region Public Schools, where she helps lead an organization serving over 2,500 students and 375 staff members across seven schools in Troy & Albany, New York.
After earning her B.A. in English Literature at SUNY Oswego, Johanna spent a decade in Manhattan building a career in higher education. She completed a Master's in Counseling from NYU Steinhardt while working full-time at NYU Stern and afterwards became the Director of Career Development for Baruch College’s MBA students. She traded Brooklyn for West Palm Beach, where she taught at Palm Beach State College, delivered sexual health education with Planned Parenthood, and led a special education school focused on students with complex social-emotional needs. In 2016 she found herself back in Upstate New York where she served as Director of Operations at Saratoga Independent School before being recruited to lead three Uncommon Schools campuses in Troy. One merger and four schools later, KIPP Capital Region Public Schools is the largest charter network in the area.
Outside of work, Johanna is an award-winning storyteller, a certified yoga instructor, and a Death Doula. She has cultivated a stellar community of friends, family and colleagues. She lives happily in Saratoga Springs with her two cats, Buddy & Holly.
